Vlimmer – XIIIIIII (EP – Blackjack Illuminist)

Genre/Influences: Cold-wave, dream-pop, cinematographic.

Format: Digital, CD, Cassette.

Background/Info: “XIIIIIII” is the second last EP in a series of eighteen. Alexander Donat has achieved fine new songs.

Content: The songs remain inspired by 80s influences, but globally speaking this EP is down-tempo like. Some passages are even pretty soundtrack-orientated. “Zwischenkörper” is the single track, which sounds a bit harder. Vlimmer this time invites the listener to visit an evasive universe filled with sadness.

+ + + : The EP’s are succeeding each other at regular basis, but never sound the same. It says something about the creative mind of the artist, but still about his open-minded approach. This work is characterized by sad atmospheres. Especially the last song “Farbenquell” accomplished with fine bleeps is a noticeable cut.

– – – : The ideas are there, but I can’t speak about a real accomplishment here. If “XIIIIII” probably is my favorite Vlimmer-EP, this latest one is a bit disappointing.

Conclusion: This last Vlimmer-EP is definitely not the one you’ve to listen to first. The atmospheric side is not the most convincing one from this project.

Best songs: “Farbenquell”, “Zwischenkörper”.
